Swedish Railway
Gain access to everything you need to know about the Swedish Railway service through their very accessible mobile site.
WHO WOULD USE IT?
Swedes and holiday-makers alike can use this – the English language option is pretty near the top (the main image shown is with that option already selected) and the searches feature pull down menus for choosing the station you need. Disabled travellers will also find out plenty of need-to know information for their journeys.
WALK THROUGH
The initial menu for sj.se is pretty short and self-explanatory, with an option to buy tickets, cancellation information, and a link for travel tips and business travel. There is a general search function on the homepage as well as one further down for buying tickets with a drop down menu of stations – unfortunately it doesn’t seem to work. Scroll further down for several features including an environmental section with a very complicated calculator to help you figure out how much damage is being done to the environment during specific journeys via every form of transport. Very clever but too complex.
Click on the homepage tickets link and below the main menu will be a sub-menu of ticket options, including "Buy your tickets here". That will take you to a page of useful information, but further down is a journey finder with drop down menus for area, dates, time and ticket types. Usefully you can also choose the route you’d like to take and any breaks you would like to include. Unfortunately the day menu doesn’t work, the return journey menu has not been formatted properly, making it impossible to use and despite several attempts, the “Continue” button at the end of the page frustratingly leads away from the site altogether.
Back on the homepage, the cancellation link simply directs you to the conditions attached to your ticket. "Travel with SJ" seems to be editorial that doesn’t add anything of value to the site but "Travel Tips" has some information on discounts as well as trips you can take to tourist spots and events, complete with relevant timetable information for them. The "Business Trips" tab is pretty useless, extolling the virtues of travel by train for work, with a link to group discount information, which is already available via "Travel Tips". Other links deeper within the site go through to plenty of information about the facilities and services on the trains, including those for people with disabilities.

Features
English language option
Ticket information
A section for disabled travellers
A travel emissions calculator
Detailed journey search
Pros
The site is translated in English
Lots of information
Cons
Search functions don’t work
Clunky to navigate
Has some irrelevant sections
Too copy heavy
Verdict
The site has plenty of useful information for users and is actually too copy heavy on the whole but it’s real flaw lies in the fact that, other than the whole thing is quite clunky to navigate, its journey search functions just do not work. It’s a shame because in theory it’s well thought out and would allow users to tailor their trips quite specifically.
